We have lived in our home for 21 years and it was beginning to show its age. We considered buying another house or condominium but in the end decided to remodel what we had as we loved our quiet neighborhood and location and frankly, we really liked our home -- it had "good bones" but needed a facelift. Then, the difficult process began: finding a contractor. We were warned that when you begin a house remodel, the contractor and the subs really become relatives you can't get rid of for awhile so the relationship between us and them had to be one we could live with for several months.
